A Louisville, Kentucky woman was arrested Thursday evening
after she failed to complete one of the most basic tasks of motherhood.
Instead of making sure her child was safe, 39-year-old Nicole Compagnone
decided to blow off her maternal duties and do a little partying
instead. That idiotic decision landed her in jail, which is exactly what
she deserved.
Compagnone’s little girl is only in the second grade at Hite
Elementary School in Louisville, and yesterday she was essentially
abandoned by her mother, who failed to show up to pick her up from
school. Even after being contacted several times by the school’s
principal, Compagnone had given multiple excuses, but she still hadn’t
come to get her child, so the principal finally contacted Louisville
police.
According to WAVE 3 News,
the police also called Compagnone, which apparently got her attention.
She eventually arrived at the school at 7:45 p.m., more than four hours
after the end of the school day. Reportedly, she didn’t appear to be
concerned at all that she was so late and tried to give the excuse that
she’d been at work and simply “forgot” about her child. She also
admitted that she had been drinking.
Police say Compagnone “was nonchalant about being late and failed to execute reasonable diligence and care to make sure her daughter was not neglected or abandoned.”Compagnone eventually told officers she hadn’t picked her daughter up because she was at work and that she “forgot.” Police say she also admitted to having “at least one shot of alcohol to drink.” However, police say they learned Compagnone’s was “not on the clock” and could have picked up her daughter.
Compagnone was arrested on charges of endangering the
welfare of a minor, but she deserves far worse. She was reminded several
times that her child was still at the school — probably sad and scared
and wondering if her mommy was coming to get her. Compagnone lied to the
principal and the police about having been working, and when she did
show up to the school, she’d been drinking and didn’t even have the
decency to act embarrassed over her neglectful behavior.
Compagnone remains in the Louisville Metro Corrections
facility after her arraignment. She also had a bench warrant from a
previous traffic case back in 2014. Her bond was set at $5,000, and her
next court appearance will be on September, 14th. There has been no
mention of who her daughter is staying with while Compagnone is
incarcerated.
Hopefully, when Compagnone’s case goes to court, she
receives sufficient punishment to snap her into line and also gets a
stern lecture from the judge. Her first priority should always be her
child.
