In 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal district court's ruling in Browder v. Gayle (1956) that segregation on interstate buses was unconstitutional. They would issue their decision in December with the Montgomery Bus Boycott ending quickly thereafter.

Telling a friend you’re paying him back for “ISIS beer funds!!!” is not a particularly good joke. I knew this as I was typing it at 2am on a Sunday, but what I did not know is that it’s an even worse joke on Venmo because the federal government will detain your $42.
Almost immediately after I hit send, Venmo—you know, the app that allows people to send money to each other via their phones—blasted an e-mail into my inbox. The company wanted to “better understand a recent payment,” specifically:
On 02/21/16, you sent a payment for the amount of $42.00 for, “ISIS beer funds!!!” We’re trying to understand:
  • your reference to “ISIS.”
  • the purpose of this payment, including a detailed explanation of what you intended to pay for and the establishment/location, if applicable.
Stuck between explaining a dumb memo line or trying to minimize the reference to a brutal terrorist organization, I tried to play it off as a misunderstanding.

Venmo wasn’t buying it. “Unfortunately,” wrote someone who signed the e-mail as Heather, “due to OFAC regulations, we are not allowed to give the funds back to you or issue a refund.”
Because I don’t regularly bump into terrorists or sicarios at Whole Foods, I had no clue what an OFAC was. As it goes, the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is a decades-old institution, quietly working to keep money out of the hands of America’s enemies. In 1962, the Division of Foreign Assets Control—which President Harry Truman had used to block transfers destined for North Korea and China—metamorphosed into OFAC. This association now has to deal with tipsy hipsters grasping at wit through instant payment apps.
It turns out—shockingly—this isn’t the first time someone’s Venmo transaction was cut off at the knees with a reference to subjects that are a matter of national security. Venmo won’t explicitly say what words will trigger blockage, Gawker pointed out in October. But you can get a sense from OFAC’s sanction lists, which comprised chunks of text that look like:

Compared with the slick, blue-and-white glaze of Venmo’s app and almost cheerfully corporate correspondence, OFAC is all sharp corners and pointed questions. I could not have tried to describe ISIS as an autocorrect fuck-up had I wanted to. After forging ahead through a series of Web forms, detailing why the money was being sent and how Venmo was involved, OFAC spat out a Case Number but not the funds.
The case, as of this writing, is still “pending,” likely because there are more pressing issues at hand. (OFAC did not respond to an e-mail request for comment.)
When I asked a Venmo representative how commonly this happens, she wouldn’t say how many transactions get blocked nor how many blocked transactions manage to slide through to the other side. I was directed to a recent Venmo blog post making it clear the company had to review these transfers as a matter of federal law, which makes sense. It was otherwise light on detail, which also makes sense but is rather unhelpful.
Who knows how long those $42 dollars will be tucked in one of Uncle Sam’s digital lockboxes, quietly collecting interest. A year? Five? The moral of the story, I guess, is not to buy $42 worth of beer at a bar in the West Village.

An High Court in Abuja today Wednesday December 10th ordered the Inspector General of Police, Director-General of State Security Services and Controller General of Nigeria Customs Services to confiscate Obasanjo`s book, 'My Watch' from public vendors, NAN reports.
Justice Valentine Ashi, gave the order after former President Olusegun Obasanjo allegedly went ahead to publish his book titled " My Watch'' in spite of a court order made on Dec. 5, restraining him from making the publication.
"I am of the view that the defendant having gone ahead to publish the book, he should therefore show cause within 21 days of the order served on him on why he should not be punished for contempt of court.
"The Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of State Security Services and the Controller General of Nigeria Customs Services are hereby directed to recover the book from sales vendors," the Judge ordered.
He directed that the book should be kept with the registrar of the court pending the determination of the suit.

Ashi also restrained the defendant from further printing, publishing or circulating the book " My Watch'' which, he said "touches on the subject matter of the suit before the court.''

Earlier, counsel to Obasanjo, Mr Realwan Okpanachi, told the court that the book was published before the order was granted.

Okpanachi argued that the book had been in circulation since November and the order was made on Dec. 5.

The Counsel to Buruji Kashamu, Mr Alex Izinyo, SAN, submitted that the defendant`s application was a calculated attempt to deceive the court.

Izinyo argued that the defendant admitted in his motion papers that the book was published on Nov. 10 and in another paragraph, it was also stated that the book was published on Nov. 2.
"My lord, the burden of proof lay with the defendant to show the court three volumes of the book,'' he said.

Ashi adjourned to Jan. 13 and 14, 2015, for hearing of the substantive case.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the plaintiff Mr Buruji Kashamu, had earlier dragged former President Olusegun Obasanjo before the court for libel.
NAN further recalls that Kashamu alleged that the former addressed him as ex-convict in the letter he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan titled, "Before it is too late''.

"By the Constitution, I had to inaugurate or prorogue the National Assembly on June 4, 1999. The most important officer in the National Assembly is the senate president and that office had been zoned to the South-east. And here was where Atiku Abubakar, my vice-president,first showed his hand and his character.
"Without seeking my view or approval, he started planning the installation of Chuba Okadigbo as the senate president. I did a background check on Chuba including his past as a student and made enquiries about him in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) under (President Shehu) Shagari and no one would recommend him for the post of senate president.

"I left Atiku to go on his chase while I carried out a meticulous and detailed investigation and background check on each senator from the South-east. The one that appeared most appointable was Evan Enwerem. I canvassed the senate across the board for his election and he was elected. Atiku did not expect it and he felt sore.

"He began to strategise for Enwerem to be removed and Chuba Okadigbo to be installed. His strategy worked because I was at Abuja airport to receive a visiting head of state when the news reached me that the Senate had impeached Enwerem and elected Okadigbo. I was not perturbed. I came to understand from some senators including Florence Ita-Giwa, who later became my Special Adviser/ Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, that Atiku distributed US$5,000 each to some senators to carry out the 'coup'.
"That was the beginning of bribing the legislature to carry out a particular line of action to suit or satisfy the purpose or desire of an individual or a group. The National Assembly had tasted blood and they would continue to want more. From the day I nominated Atiku to be my vice, he set his mind not for any good, benefit or service of the country, but on furiously planning to upstage, supplant or remove me at all cost and to take my place.

"That was what I brought him for, but he was impatient and over-ambitious.He was not ready to learn and to wait. His marabout, who predicted that despite being elected as governor, he would not be sworn in as a governor, which happened, also assured him that he would take over from me in a matter of months rather than years.

"All his plans, appointments of people and his actions were towards the actualisation of his marabout's prediction. Once I realised his intention and programme, I watched him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard. I could not succumb to the distraction, diversion and malevolence of an ambitious but unwise deputy.

"The work in hand was more important than a confrontationalrelationship with my deputy, a man over whom I knew I had far more experience and outreach in all matters. To alert him of what I knew he was up to, would only lead to lying, denial, more mischievous plans and more duplicity on his part.
"He was better managed that way. What was important was not allowing myself to be surprised or outmanoeuvred by him. I must always seize the initiative and know what was going on if not in his mind, but at least in his camp. That I did very effectively.

"Sometime in the fourth quarter of 2004, an associate of Atiku came to my residence at the Aso Villa from Atiku's official residence. He felt uncomfortable and I tried to make him feel at ease. Then, he settled to tell me the story of what had just transpired in Atiku's residence. I listened with rapt attention.
"He went on to say that Atiku told him that for him to become the President of Nigeria, the 2007 elections were only a formality.

"The seven ingredients he needed for his enthronement were already in his hands. He controlled the National Assembly because both the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representativeswere in his pocket. He controlled twenty-eight out of thirty-six governors. He had control of the media. His influence over the judiciary was overwhelming.

"What he needed was foreign endorsement and for that he had employed two lobby groups in the US and one in the UK. And finally, the money for the elections was in his purse.
"When the man finished, I thanked him without passing any comment. The man was surprised at my reaction and asked, 'You have nothing to say to these?' I said that I had nothing to say and I immediately called my ADC, Chris Jemitola, to play a game of squash with me.

"On our way to the squash court with my ADC, I said, 'People at times make plans and leave God out of their plans.' My casual remark struck Chris and he said, 'Sir, that was a profound statement.' I said that I made the statement because of what I had just heard of Atiku's plan. I was not convinced he had put God in his plans.

"Atiku was confident and God was laughing. Most of Atiku's ingredients soon started to fall out of place one by one. The first was the party, PDP.
"He thought I was powerless and had no clue about the execution of his plan with his group; part of his attack on me was for national chairman of the party to give the first salvo, then other things would follow as his grip on the party would be firm and consolidated.

"That salvo came in the form of a letter to me from the chairman of the party, Audu Ogbeh, who had fully defected with (Iyorchia) Ayu to Atiku.
"The letter, which was not the product of any issue or matter discussed with or at any party meeting, came suddenly. When I received it, I could read the sinister intention behind it.
"I spent that night writing my reply and I sent it in the morning. My reply was clear. I wondered why Atiku and his group did not realise that with my reply, the battle line was clear or maybe they thought that the seven ingredients would remain intact to the end.
"My assistants had moles within the Atiku group. Anything that they planned would be reported. That was the case after Ogbeh's letter. They decided that Ogbeh should appear remorseful and come with the National Working Committee to apologise to me. It was not from their hearts, but to lure me to a 'killing ground'.

"All pieces of information that were reported were verified because it would not come from only one informant. Timely information is a very important principle of war and also of politics. In politics, just as in war, what matters is not just your plan, but knowledge of your opponent's plan. Knowing their plan, I had the choice of playing along with them or being firm, I chose the latter.
"I told Ogbeh that my relationship with him as national chairman and me as national leader of the party was based on mutual confidence and trust. But with his letter, my reply and what I knew of him then, I could no longer work with him in confidence and trust.

"There were only two choices left for both of us in our best interest and that of the party - he, leaves as chairman or I leave as leader of the party.
"The following Sunday, I called at his house, which I had done on several occasions in the past when there was an important party matter to discuss. This time, I asked him to give me an undated letter of resignation as the national chairman.

"I waited, he gave me but it was wrongly addressed to me rather than to the national secretary of the party as stipulated in the party's constitution.
"Ogbeh reported to his group and it was decided by them to play on and to wait for my disgrace whenever I presented a letter of resignation not addressed to the national secretary.
"The informants did their job and I, once again, paid another visit to Ogbeh at his residence. He entertained me to a meal and drink, and changed the addressee on his letter of resignation.
"It would appear he never reported the change to his group. When I considered it opportune and appropriate, the letter was dated and presented to National Executive Committee of the party, which regrettably accepted the resignation.

"With that, whatever control Atiku claimed to have over the party began to crumble. But he did not think so and went on to boast that if I made my daughter the national chairman, it would be a matter of weeks not months before he would put her in his pocket.
"I therefore had to look for a successor chairman, who would be too big, uncompromising and inflexible to be lured and controlled by Atiku. I found such a man in Senator (Dr.) Amadu Ali, whom I had known many years earlier as a medical doctor in the army..."

One of the first Miss American winners to make it big in Hollywood, Mary Ann Mobley, has died. Mary Ann, who won the Miss America pageant in 1959, died yesterday Tuesday Dec. 9th in Beverly Hills after a long battle with breast cancer, TMZ reports. She was 75 years old.

The former beauty queen appeared in several Hollywood movies and sitcoms including 'Diff'rent Strokes. Her family says she will buried next week in her native Mississippi.

Popular Kannywood actor and comedian, Rabilu Musa aka Dan Ibro has died. He died yesterday Dec. 9th but the cause of death has not yet been revealed. Rabilu was jailed several times by the Kano State Government under the ex-Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, for acting in movies believed to be violating the censorship rules in Kano. Dan Ibro subsequently laid low until recently when he started featuring in movies again. May his soul rest in peace...amen.

VH1 Hit the Floor star and dancer Stephanie Moseley was shot dead at her home last night by her husband, rapper Earl Hayes, who then turned the gun on himself. Earl, who is a member of boxer Floyd Mayweather’s Money Team. Earl was said to have been haunted by Stephanie's infidelity and recently accused her of cheating with singer Trey Songs.

Neighbours of the couple called the police after they heard gun shots from the couple's LA home and heard Stephanie screaming. When police got there, they found the bodies of Stephanie and Earl. And there even reports that Floyd witnessed the murder via Facetime.

Sources connected with Hayes tell us ... around 2 years ago he separated from Stephanie because of what he says was her affair with Songz. They got back together but, as one friend put it, "He was crushed and never got over it." We're told he frequently brought up Songz.
Hayes accused Moseley of having multiple affairs with various other entertainers. She was a backup dancer who worked with numerous famous singers, including Chris Brown and Usher, but we're told Hayes never mentioned them as a source of conflict.
Hayes and Moseley married in 2008 and his friends say he loved her and tried rationalizing staying together.

2 and half year old Rafael and 15months old Michael (both pictured above) were abducted from their home in Isheri Magodo Estate, Lagos last night by their maid. The children's parents left the kids in the care of the maid, their sick grandmum and her nurse and went out briefly yesterday. By the time they returned home, the maid and the kids were no where to be found. The maid took them away after the grandma and her nurse had gone to bed.

All efforts to reach the maid by phone has proved abortive. And the agency that brought the maid also can't reach her. Please anyone with any information that could help with finding these children, contact Darlington on 08037071370 or the nearest police station.

The Bible says we should abstain from “sexual immorality.” What is sexual immorality? “Sex before marriage,” they say. Says who? It is a tradition, not an inviolable maxim — a tradition which made sense in earlier cultures where everyone married AND they did so at a young age.

Sex before marriage is certainly a risky venture, but articles like these unnecessarily shame devoted lovers who have not yet overcome the logistical hurdles of holding a wedding. In all honesty, the girl in this article sounds totally self-absorbed/self-righteous, some of the most disgusting traits for a Christian to have. We should NOT be holding her up as a model for Christian women.”

The Lifetime network is not allowing their Aaliyah biopic experience stop them. They has released the trailer for the upcoming movie, “Whitney”, starring Yaya DaCosta Alafia as the late pop star. The movie marks the directorial debut for actress Angela Bassett and is out on Jan 17.

The film will focus on Whitney Houston’s rise to stardom from her humble start in a New Jersey church choir, to becoming one of the world’s greatest and beloved singer and her romance to R&B bad boy Bobby Brown portrayed by “Into The Storm’s” Arlen Escarpeta.

The highly anticipated movie will also tackle the late singer’s battles with substance abuse and more.
