Two separate men were travelling in the same direction when
traffic came to a sudden halt. A woman jumped out of a car parked
alongside the road and ran straight into traffic, but not before the two
guys saw who she was with and what had happened inside the vehicle that
made her flee for her life. That’s when the good guys went running and
did something about what they witnessed.
Joey Thomas was heading home from work in Portland, Oregon,
at the same time William Byrum was on his way out of town to visit a
friend in Vancouver, when both men were put in the right place at the
right time. Before traffic had come to a standstill, a car got their
attention when a man inside the ride began whaling on the woman driving.
But this was only the beginning of a devastating debacle.
The abuser, later identified as 26-year-old Darrell Classen,
had a deplorable past as a sex offender. It’s unknown specifically why
the woman was driving this degenerate around, but she wouldn’t be for
long. Classen was seen punching and slapping the victim as the car moved
quickly down the road, until she pulled over to the shoulder to make an
escape.
The woman got to the side of the road, threw the car into
park, then went running through the traffic which had now come to a
standstill. This was one time when rush hour was helpful, since in two
of the stopped cars were a couple of brave men not willing to let an
abuser get away with beating a woman. Thomas said that as soon as he saw
the woman run, he got out of his truck and started chasing the suspect
down. A couple of other guys and a female bystander were right behind
him to help in his heroic effort, according to WTSP.
“I was very upset, very upset,” Thomas said of witnessing
the abuse. He put those feeling immediately into action when he and
Byrum caught up with Classen and gave him a taste of his own treatment.
The good Samaritans body slammed the sex offender, then bound him up
with a makeshift handcuff device they creatively made from a briefcase
strap.

“I picked him up and just slammed him down on the ground so
that I could get on top of him,” Byrum described of the instant justice
the group inflicted on this fool. The group kept the pervert pinned and
restrained until officers arrived. “Yeah, you’re going to jail. We are
gonna sit here until the cops get here, and you’re going to jail,” Byrum
said he told Classen, as he pressed his knee into his back and held him
to the ground.
Police praised these heroes for helping a stranger, stating
that had they not stepped up to defend this woman, her injuries could
have been much worse. The victim is now recovering, although she is
still understandably shaken up from what she endured. Investigators are
still working to determine the connection she has with Classen, and why
she was in the car with him.
Classen was taken into custody for assault and reckless
endangerment. These new charges are in addition to his long list of
offences, including evading police and failure to register as a sex
offender, KGW reported.
This sex offender only belongs in one place, and that’s
jail. He’s incapable of being in public because he only knows how to
wreak havoc and hurt other people. There is no place in society for
people like him. Thank goodness for good Samaritans who are willing to
run in when others may have sat back and thought not to get involved in
other people’s problems. Who knows how many people they saved that day,
other than that one woman, and what other crimes they averted because
they stepped up for a stranger.
