It does not take a genius to figure out that today’s
generation of kids are spoiled. It seems that every child has a phone,
iPod, laptop, and a credit card at their disposal. They are a generation
that has information and shopping at their fingertips. Everything comes
at lightning fast speeds, making the task of teaching patience even
harder with our impetuous broods, which is what one father in Virgina is
contending with after his 13-year-old Julia took her phone privileges
too far.

Julia is in eighth grade, and by most accounts she’s a
responsible teen. She’s an honor roll student, has a strong work ethic,
works with special needs children, and is the most recent recipient of
the Hanover Volunteerism Award. Julia, like most teenagers today, also
has a phone and made the unfortunate mistake of racking up a colossal
phone bill.
How much was this phone bill? $541.36.
The tiny teen racked up this mega bill after spending too
much time on Instagram, posting photos to all of her friends. Julia’s
father, Jared Cramer, said he learned of the massive phone bill when his
daughter called him while he was driving. “She called me and said, ‘You
owe 500 and some odd dollars,'” he recalled.
Initially, Julia thought she would receive a small
punishment. “She thought after I got that bill it was going to be a slap
on the wrist, don’t let it happen again situation.” Jared explained.
However, he had a better idea to teach her an important lesson.
Immediately, he took Julia’s phone away.
He put all of her makeup, designer clothes, and fine jewelry in one
closet with a lock. He labeled all these items with post-it notes with a
number that corresponded with how many chores she had to do to get that
item back.

Don’t worry everyone, he did provide her with her basic
necessities, such as deodorant, toothbrush, a bar of soap, and three
outfits he selected at Walmart.
Cramer said his daughter is taking the punishment pretty well and is working hard to work off her debt.
This is a prime example of parenting done right by this
father. Cramer has already raised a pretty amazing child, but there is
always room to improve and teach our children valuable lessons. In the
news, we are constantly hearing about self-entitled adults, so it only
stands to reason that they were never taught about work ethic or taking
responsibility for their actions. If all parents made just half the
effort that this father is with his daughter, the world would be a much
better place.
