According to reports, the Boko Haram Islamic terrorists in Nigeria have taken over the town of Chibok where they had in April abducted hundreds of girls from their school. This latest seizure of the town has forced thousands of residents to flee, a local official said Friday.
Bana Lawan, chairman of the Chibok local government, confirmed this to The Associated Press, saying that the insurgents rode into town shooting from pickup trucks and motorcycles and quickly took control around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon,
Nobody can tell you what is happening there today because everybody is just trying to escape with their lives.
HuffPo reports that attempts to call the cellphones of parents of some of the kidnapped Chibok girls did not succeed. Ths may be because Boko Haram often destroys cell phone towers when they attack, and also the military cuts communications to such places.
The Nigerian military had last month announced a cease fire with the terrorists, but just over a week ago, Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau released a video denying such a ceasefire agreement existed. He also gave more details on the girls kidnapped from Chibok, in April, saying they had converted to Islam and been married off.
