On Monday, Cardi B posted an Instagram video showing off her and daughter Kulture’s new Swarovski-encrusted Reebok sneakers, which the rapper dubbed “f—king fire.”
The mastermind behind the crystal-covered mommy-and-me footwear? A-Morir creative director Kerin Rose Gold, who regularly creates bespoke bedazzled pieces for celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna.
Swarovski reached out to Gold to work on the project, commissioning the designer to create a pair of custom sneakers complete with personal details, like Kulture’s birth date (which is bedazzled across the toe box) and Cardi’s name (which appears on the heel).
To get the look, Gold used approximately 4,500 crystals in multiple colors and sizes, along with an additional 900 aurora borealis gems in 10 different shapes and sizes to form the band that wraps around the shoe.
While Gold worked closely with Swarovski and Reebok to create the majority of the shoe’s design, she told Page Six Style that she had to go a little rogue in order to pay proper tribute to the “I Like It” rapper.
“As opposed to having the band be mainly crystals with a few fun gems thrown in, I took some creative liberty because I wanted to pay homage to Cardi’s oft-gem-encrusted, fabulous nails and only used fancy gem stones all the way around,” she said. “Doing that kind of work is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, but you’re inventing what the puzzle pieces are.”
And making a shoe that ornate is no easy feat. “Not only do I have to properly execute the design, but I have to know what professional adhesives work on the appropriate materials, make sure the crystals are applied in a way that they’re strongly affixed without showing any adhesive and make everything look flawless and beautiful!” the designer explained.
“Having said that, this mother-daughter masterpiece took me between 15-18 hours. If you wanted to try this at home, it would take you closer to 30. Think about it like running a marathon; you get a gold medal for running the fastest. If strassing [the art of fully embellishing something in crystals] was a marathon race, I’d come in first place. If this was a sprint, I’d be the Usain Bolt of bedazzling. Speed is oft looked down on as if it’s a bad thing, as if that means it must be easy if it was so fast to do. [It’s] not!”
