Poll: Michelle Obama overtakes Hillary Clinton as 'most admired woman'

Former first lady Michelle Obama has become the first woman in 17 years to take over Hillary Clinton's long-held spot as the woman Americans admire most, a survey said Thursday.

Gallup showed Obama in the top spot in the results of a new poll.

The recognition comes after after she promoted the importance of voting in the November elections, and embarked on a tour to promote her autobiography, Becoming.

Obama finished second to Clinton three times before this year. Oprah Winfrey was the second most admired woman, followed by Clinton and first lady Melania Trump.

Queen Elizabeth, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi round out the top 10.

The answers were split, with Democrats and independents more likely to view Barack and Michelle Obama as most admired, and Republicans more likely to think the same of Donald and Melania Trump.

Among men, former president Barack Obama was ranked as the most admired man for the 11th straight year, followed by President Donald Trump and former President George W. Bush.

Pope Francis, Bill Gates, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former President Bill Clinton, Dalai Lama, former Vice President Joe Biden, entrepreneur Elon Musk and Vice President Mike Pence filled out the men's top 10.

The poll results were based on a survey of 1,025 and has a margin of error of 4 points.
