Emergency services were called to the school at 11.30am.
St John said seven were taken to hospital - five of which were students - with one paitent suffering serious injuries.
The students are between 15 and 16-years-old.
De La Salle College principal Myles Hogarty said a faulty gas bottle on a portable barbeque exploded while the students were cooking sausages for an economics project.
Mr Hogarty said parents had been contacted.
