The “Today” show’s 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other co-anchors come Monday, a spokesperson told Page Six, ending Kelly’s run of just over a year at the show. Kelly’s lawyer Bryan Freedman released his own statement after NBC’s, saying on Friday that “Megyn remains an employee of NBC News and discussions about next steps are continuing.”
Despite the statement, insiders told us that Kelly’s exit is imminent.
“She’s technically still an employee. It’s complicated. She has a multiyear deal. They’re in negotiations and figuring out what the end result is going to be. It’s all a process, but they’re likely parting ways,” a source said. Another added, “Her lawyers are doing all the talking now.”
Yet another source said that if NBC keeps Kelly, it would be “an Ann Curry situation, where they try to save face and give her some fake job when everybody knows she’ll never be seen again at 30 Rock.” Other sources told us Kelly isn’t looking to get paid to not work.
Page Six has learned that the 9 a.m. hour for all of next week will be hosted by other “Today” talent but filmed from Kelly’s studio.
On Thursday, there were reports that Kelly’s lawyer asked that Ronan Farrow attend a Friday meeting with NBC brass as a witness. But a source told us that Farrow knew nothing about the meeting. We hear that in the end, the Friday talks happened over the phone.
NBC hired Kelly last year in a reported $69 million deal. But her poorly rated run was bumpy from the start. She also called out the network on its handling of Farrow’s Harvey Weinstein story, and booked a former “Today” staffer on her show who alleged she’d had an affair with disgraced anchor Matt Lauer.
The latest issue exploded over her offensive comments about blackface Halloween costumes. But the writing may have already been on the wall.
