Rachel Pine woke up one day to a strange new terrifying
sensation, to which she had no initial recollection of how it happened.
Her hearing had suddenly become so intense that she could literally hear
everything happening inside her body, including the movement of her
eyes in her head, everything her heart did, and all the movements her
bones made.
Although it sounds like a sensational ability, it was
anything but that for Pine, who had become so inflicted with her extreme
sense of sound over time that she was unable to do the activities she
enjoyed and could only work for very short periods of time. The constant
and real sounds were not just in her head. She heard everything so
loudly and so acutely that it caused intense migraines and dizzy spells.
Life for Pine was maddening, made worse by the fact that doctor after
doctor couldn’t give her answers about what was causing this unbearable
situation.
“I would end up in bed usually before noon and just lay there,” Pine told ABC News.
“I couldn’t watch TV — it was too loud. I couldn’t listen to music…
Basically, I had to lay there and hear my heart beat and feel my brain
spin.”
Pine didn’t give up. She had no choice but to keep seeking
answers if she ever wanted to get her life back, should her condition be
fixable. Finally, after nine doctors and no real answers, she found a
physician who realized the problem. Dr. Quinton Gopen found an abnormal
hole in the bone of the inner ear, which was essentially an opening into
the sounds of her body, magnifying each function to the fullest extent.
Better than finally knowing what was the cause of her
debilitating issue, was that it could be corrected with a minimally
invasive procedure that plugged the hole. Dr. Gopen told her she would
be in and out of the small surgery and get on with her life without any
symptoms. Those words were music to her pained ears.
Dr. Gopen corrected her inner ear issue, and Pine feels like
she finally has her life back. She is able to do all the activities she
missed. Out of all the functions she could hear in her body, she’s
happy that she “listened” to her gut, which told her to keep seeking an
answer. For that, she got the relief to an extremely obscure ailment she
desperately needed.
