A video of a horrific attack during a football game is going viral on YouTube. According to The Blaze,
the incident occurred on the evening of Friday, September 4 during a
football game between John Jay High School and Marble Falls High School
in Marble Falls, Texas.
It has been reported that two of the John Jay players were
ejected from the game by a referee, and the decision definitely didn’t
sit well with the players’ fellow teammates, as they felt the play was a
bad call. So, apparently, they decided to make their sentiments known.
Based on the disturbing footage, one can only assume that
the players’ actions were intentional because the volatile hit was
definitely inexcusable. The brief clip of the play, which occurred just
seconds before the game ended, shows a referee standing in the backfield
as the offense runs the play.
Then, out of nowhere, one of the players ambushes the
referee from behind and knocks him to the ground. Once he hits the
ground, two other players plow into him again. In just two days, the
17-second attack has received more than five million views, and of
course, the school district is quite displeased with the players’
allegedly deliberate actions targeting the referee.
According to My San Antonio,
Northside ISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez released a statement on behalf
of the school district. “This is disturbing,” Gonzalez said in the
district’s official statement. “It is not the sportsmanlike behavior
that we teach our students. We are cooperating fully with the University
Interscholastic League with this investigation.”
The University Interscholastic League also released a
statement echoing the district’s sentiments. “The League is working with
the school districts and officials involved to conduct a thorough
investigation. The UIL takes this matter very seriously and will take
appropriate action once the investigation is complete,” the statement
said.
The players’ actions are definitely an example of poor
sportsmanship, and they should be held accountable for their
behavior. Although there have been cases where referees have made bad
calls, this is never the way to respond. According to the Huffington Post,
the referee wasn’t injured in the attack, but things could have been a
lot worse, since there have been many unfortunate reports where volatile
hits on the football field have led to serious injuries. Hopefully,
these players are reprimanded and learn from the actions.
