STURGIS, SD - A fixture of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is in ruins after a massive fire overnight Tuesday.
Sturgis volunteer fire crews were called to the Full
Throttle Saloon just after midnight. When they arrived heavy smoke was
pouring out from the eaves, but soon the entire main bar building was
being devoured by flames. The effort to save the structure was hampered
by an inability to get inside and mount an offensive against the flames.
All the doors were locked, and fire crews eventually had to cut a hole
in garage doors to make an entry.
"We tried making
access through the west side walk-in doors, but they were locked,"
Sturgis Assistant Fire Chief Shawn Barrows told the Rapid City Journal.
"We came around to the front-side garage doors on the north side of the
building and cut a hole in it to make entry to the building."
The
fire gained momentum when it hit the area that contains the Sloonshine
Distillery. Reports say there was an estimated 500 gallons of grain
alcohol inside the building.
There
are no hydrants or plumbed water supply on the grounds of the Full
Throttle Saloon, which opens in June and closes just after the Sturgis
Rally. Water had to be trucked in from a local school, further hampering
firefighting efforts.
