Child rescued after armed standoff

Dana Thiede, KARE
MINNEAPOLIS - A three-year-old child is safe after being rescued by Minneapolis Police at the conclusion of an armed standoff early Friday.
Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder tells KARE 11 the situation began around 10:30 p.m. Thursday with a 911 call reporting an armed, suicidal male with a young child inside the home. A woman and another child were able to escape before officers arrived.
Squads responded to the scene at 39th and Garfield Avenues and began negotiations with the man.
At around 2:45 a.m. Friday negotiations broke off, and shortly afterwards SWAT officers used flash bang grenades to enter the home.
They were able to safely remove the three-year-old from the home, and the male was taken into custody.
Elder says police have had contact with the suspect in the past, but did not have specifics on what those incidents involved.
Charges against the man are pending.
