Frisky couples may want to re-think their contraception method.
Christie Fletcher, 22, of Wrexham, North Wales, was on the
birth-control pill and was surprised to learn she was pregnant with
triplets.
"I was so shocked to find that I was pregnant again," she told Mirror. “I had been taking my pill carefully and never in a million years did I expect to end up with triplets.”
Fletcher and her partner, Carwyn, 27, were already parents
of a 2-year-old boy, Osain. Not only was Fletcher pregnant with
triplets, but they are also non-identical, which normally happens with
In-Vitro Fertilization treatments. Fletcher gave birth at eight months
to Jorj, the biggest of the three at 4 lbs 13 oz, Isaac, 4 lbs 8 oz, and
Jac, just 4 lbs 3.5 oz.
“According to the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive
Healthcare, with perfect use, the failure rate of the combined pill is
0.3% and with typical use is around nine percent,” said Dr. Surabhi
Nanda, from Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust.
"As such, the chance of having a naturally conceived
triplet pregnancy is approximately 1 in 6,000 to 8,000 births and even
rarer for non-identical triplets,” she said. “It is difficult to say
whether the getting pregnant on the pill and conceiving a triplet
pregnancy are directly related, as the odds of both the events happening
concurrently are indeed very low.”
Despite the unusual circumstances, Fletcher is happy with
her new family. "Having this many babies takes some getting used to,”
she said. “They certainly keep me busy, but I love my huge brood. I now
have my hands full with four boys and I don't plan on having any more.”
Fletcher will not be taking the birth control pill
anymore. "I'm not relying on the pill again," she said. “This time, I'm
making sure I get the implant.”
