British mother Maria Brewer thought she had the perfect birthday gift picked out for her daughter Willow — an adorable talking koala bear — until she brought it home and realized the toy shouted obscenities, namely “motherf*****.”
The 33-year-old mother of two first gave the toy to Willow’s 3-year-old sister Meghan to play with, which was when she and her daughter noticed the stuffed animal made koala gurgling noises, followed by the inappropriate term. The toy is battery operated and is supposed to make sounds and move its arms and ears, but the foul language was more than this mother had bargained for.
Brewer was forced to explain to her toddler what the swear word meant and that it’s not okay to say, after Meghan began repeating what she heard from the toy, UK news source the Daily Mirror reported.
“I don’t want my kids to be picking up on words like that,” Brewer told the news outlet. “I don’t know what a koala bear sounds like but I don’t think a koala bear would sound like that. It’s inappropriate,” she added.
After the mother made the startling discovery she returned the toy to the children’s shop, Smyths, where she had purchased it. The store’s manager, Graham Moriarty contested that the toy didn’t spew swear words. “The koala does not actually speak, it does not say anything,” Moriarty said.
However, Brewer stuck to her claim that what the toy said is very clear, adding that the koala repeated the term more than once.
Michele Bates from Flair, the
company that makes the koala, said, “This toy has been on sale for many
months across Europe and it is the first complaint of its kind.” The
manufacturer is now testing a large batch of toys to investigate
Brewer’s claim of this “malfunction.”
Brewer recorded the koala bear’s sounds, so you can decide for yourself if you hear what this mother claims.
