About six months after he moved in, a man living in a home with a couple of roommates found a trap door in his back deck. After calling a friend to check it out, he made quite the find. A series of images posted to Reddit show what user EngagementBacon discovered after he and his friend went wandering through the door. Apparently, the door led to the basement of the home, which he didn’t even realize it had.
Most everything underneath the house was normal items you would expect to find such as old hot water heaters, debris, and insulation to other random items peppering the ground. But in the very back of the home was an antique cast iron furnace.
The user noted that he had lived in a home with a wood stove in the past, but the sheer size of this one made him think there was something unexplained about the property’s past.
So, I’ve had wood burning stoves before while growing up. This thing is huge by comparison. I can’t imagine what would have been going on here to require this much heat in such a small house. Obviously something though. The date on the furnace says 1808, although it’s unclear when it was made by the Monitor Furnace Company. After a little research, it seems as if these can fetch a generous price if it were to be cleaned up a little.
The only question I have is how he would ever get it out of there.
Check out the rest of the images below. Why do you think such a monstrously large furnace would have been placed in a small home?
