Head of the UN World Food Programme, David Beasley, has announced that he had been tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
“I want you to be among the first to know that in the past few hours I have received confirmation, after testing, that I have the Covid-19 virus,’’ he said in a statement.

“I began feeling unwell this past weekend after returning to my home in the United States from an official visit to Canada and I took an early decision to go into self-quarantine, five days ago,’’ he added.
Beasley, 63, was the Republican governor of the U.S state of South Carolina from 1995 to 1999.
He has led the Rome-based WFP, the UN’s food aid agency, since 2017.
In his statement, he said he was in good spirits with relatively light symptoms, and plans to continue working throughout the period of self-isolation which he said must now strictly observe.
Beasley also said he was working with his team at WFP to trace back anyone who he might had close contact with at a time when he was unaware of his infection.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson effectively closed down the United Kingdom on Friday, ordering pubs, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and gyms to shut their doors in a bid to slow down the accelerating spread of the coronavirus.
Johnson said he understood just how wrenching it was to take away the ancient rights of the British people to go to the pub but that it was absolutely essential to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
“I do accept that what we’re doing is extraordinary: we’re taking away the ancient, inalienable right of free-born people of the United Kingdom to go to the pub, and I can understand how people feel about that,” Johnson said. “It’s a huge wrench.”
“It’s a huge wrench to do that, everybody understands that,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking to think of the businesses that will face difficulties as a result of the measures this country has had to take.”
The United Kingdom so far has 3,983 confirmed cases of coronavirus, after 66,976 people were tested, though the government’s scientists say it is raging across London, partly as some people are not obeying government advice to isolate.
At total of 177 people with the virus have died so far across the country.
Johnson said pubs, restaurants, theatres, nightclubs, cinemas and gyms and leisure centres were being asked to close on Friday night and to stay shut indefinitely.
“We are telling cafes, bars and restaurants to close tonight as soon as they reasonably can and not to open tomorrow,” Johnson told reporters in Downing Street. “Though to be clear, they can continue to provide takeout services.
“Some people may of course be tempted to go out tonight, and I say to those people, ‘please don’t,’” Johnson said.
The government also announced that a military veterans’ parade in London to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe (VE Day) in May would be cancelled.
New plans to mark the occasion would be unveiled shortly.
Johnson’s finance minister Rishi Sunak also launched a gigantic stimulus package to stabilise Britain’s virus-hit economy on Friday, including the government paying the wages of workers up and down the country.

Nollywood actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim has gone into self-isolation after returning from the United Kingdom.
She disclosed this in series of tweets on Friday.
The popular actress said even though she had no symptoms of Coronavirus, she had to self-isolate for 14 days in line with government’s approved standard.
She wrote: “Yesterday, in the morning, I returned to Lagos from the UK – one of the countries listed as a COVID-19 hot spot by the Federal Ministry of Health.
“I am presently in Self-Isolation according to the directives of the NCDC and in constant communication with them. So far, I have not displayed any symptoms of the Coronavirus.
“However, I will maintain my isolation and keep people at bay till the coast is clear. I hope everyone is responsible enough to do the same.
“Avoid public gatherings as much as you can. Wash your hands and sanitize them often. Stock up your home with essentials, while being considerate to others so they too can and most importantly, don’t panic. This too shall pass.”
“Love, and Light,” Ikpe-Etim wrote.
There are currently 12 recorded cases in Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, imposed a travel ban on 13 high risk countries of COVID-19 including UK.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Thursday, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to striking resident doctors to resume work.
FCTA warned that failure to do so would lead to mass sack, NAN reports.
FCT Minister of State, Ramatu Aliyu, spoke at a news conference after an emergency meeting of top management staff of the FCTA.
The doctors had commenced an indefinite strike over non-payment of salaries.
They explained that the decision followed extensive deliberation on the health threat posed by coronavirus, work conditions and the healthcare system.
But, Aliyu stated that the salary problem was not peculiar to the doctors but all staff of the FCTA.
She lamented that despite pleas and assurances, the doctors were yet to resume work.
”The administration has given the striking doctors 24 hours to resume work, after which they should consider themselves as having exited the FCT administration,” Aliyu said.
The minister thanked the Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria, nurses and midwives, medical laboratory technologists, pharmacists and other health workers who did not join the strike.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, MFM, has shut all its churches in Lagos and Ogun States in a bid to halt the spread of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.
The church also declared 30 days prayer and fasting to seek divine intervention against Coronavirus.
A statement issued by the Assistant General Overseer (Administration), Pastor Gbesan Adebambo in the Church’s headquarters at Onike Iwaya, Lagos, said “We write to draw your attention to the directive from the Governments of Lagos and Ogun States, respectively, banning all religious meetings and gatherings of more than fifty worshippers as an urgent measure taken to curtail the wide spread of the global pandemic coronavirus in the aforementioned states.”
The statement said in strict compliance with the government’s directive, no services, including deliverance ministrations must hold in any of MFM branches at all levels in the Region until further notice.
It added that all house fellowship meetings at any of the centres were postponed till further notice.
MFM also said all members were to engage in 30 days personal prayer retreat, beginning from Sunday, 22nd March 2020 to Monday, 20th April 2020 and that the prayer booklet would be made available free.
According to the statement, “Church premises should not be opened to members/worshipers for services. However, Pastors/Ministers must be positioned at the church entrance gates(s) to attend to the uniformed members, anoint them and hand Personal Prayer booklet over to them.
“Members are to be encouraged to hook up to online page on which ministration on video will be streamed live from the International Headquarters covering the period of the interim arrangement, connecting through https:ntainoffire.org/messages. Other online platforms are; MFM youtube, streaming faith prayer, azure and audio-only prayer, MFM facebook channel and MFM Television.”

 Senator Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate in the Kogi West Senatorial election has said the cure to the deadly coronavirus is through repentance.
The lawmaker on his Twitter page, said the cure is not by wearing a nose mask or hand sanitiser, but to ‘return back to God.
He said the cure for Coronavirus was in the Bible verse, II Chronicles 7: 13-15.
Citing the verse, Melaye quoted the passage as saying: “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people.
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
“Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.” It added.
Meanwhile, Nigeria on Thursday recorded new cases in Lagos State, bringing the total number of coronavirus patients in Nigeria to twelve (12)
This has led to the shut down of schools, churches, and mosques in some parts of the country.

Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, has described as “cheap and sensational”, the senate’s call on President Muhammadu Buhari to address Nigerians over the coronavirus pandemic.
At plenary on Wednesday, the lawmakers expressed concern that the president has not addressed Nigerians since the country recorded its first case of the virus last month.
But in a statement on Thursday, Shehu accused the senators of politicising the matter.
“Populist advocacies such as the one accusing the President of ‘complacency’ simply because he has not made a television address by ranking members of our respected parliament are cheap and sensational. These are not the times for populism and cheap politics,” Shehu said.
“North, South, East, and West – all Nigerians must unite to fight this plague, irrespective of religious or ideological affiliation.
“We also plead with Nigerians not to see this most peculiar of times as one to be politicised or seen as an opportunity to regurgitate grudges against the government or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Shehu said there is no cause for alarm as the country is “on top of the situation”.
He said the Buhari administration has taken some steps to check the spread of the virus.
The spokesman identified some of the measures to include travel ban on 13 countries, reduction of petrol price, and availability of credit relief for affected businesses.
“The Presidency wishes to assure Nigerians that government is on top of the situation. There is no cause for panic. So far measures put in place are working efficiently. What this country is doing has been recommended as a template,” he said.
“The President trusts the relevant Ministers in his cabinet and the officials of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), who are providing him with constant updates and professional counsel. These officials have a track record of competence.
“We do not want to create panic. But we will continue to update the Nigerian public with relevant information. We plead with every Nigerian to cooperate with the government in the fight against Covid-19 and obey all instructions from the NCDC.”
Nigeria recorded four new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 12.

Real Madrid striker, Luka Jovic, has been warned he could go to jail, after the 22-year-old ignored self-isolation procedures amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Jovic was allowed to travel home to his native Serbia, after Spanish football was shutdown.
He was ordered to self-isolate as soon as he arrives.
Serbia as a country, has ordered anyone returning from a virus-hit country to self-isolate for up to 28 days.

However, Jovic was spotted in the streets of Belgrade not long after he arrived from Madrid and also made an appearance at his girlfriend’s birthday party.
His actions have left Serbian authorities unimpressed.
“The fact that they are known sportsmen, and that they are rich, will not stop them from being punished,” Serbian Interior Minister, Nebojsa Stefanovic, said according to AP.
“Either they will respect the law, or they’ll go to jail.”

Actor Daniel Dae Kim, best known for the television series “Hawaii 5-0,” said on Thursday he had tested positive for the coronavirus, the latest among US celebrities to be diagnosed with the bug.
Kim announced the news in an Instagram posting and video, from his home in Hawaii.
“Yesterday I was diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Looks like I’ll be ok, but I wanted to share my journey with you in the hopes that you find it informative or helpful. Hope you all stay safe, calm, and above all,” Kim wrote.
Kim, 51, said he had recently been in New York shooting a television series and returned to Hawaii when production was shut down. He said he began to feel ill, quarantined himself, and was later advised to get tested in Honolulu. He said he was already feeling better.

“Thankfully for me it wasn’t life or death,” he said, urging people to follow guidelines to self isolate and wash their hands.
Kim played police lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly in “Hawaii 5-O” and is also known for his role as Korean fisherman-turned-hitman Jin-Soo Kwon on the television series “Lost.”
Kim is one of a handful of celebrities who have announced they have the disease, including actors Tom Hanks and Idris Elba, “Game of Thrones” actor Kristofer Hivju, basketball star Kevin Durant and former James Bond actress Olga Kurylenko.

The quite bold and outspoken music star took to his Instagram page to state what Nigerians should learn from the epidemic.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Thursday said it had suspended bye-elections for the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District; Bayelsa West Senatorial District; Imo North Senatorial District and Plateau South Senatorial District.
The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Mr Festus Okoye, in a statement also said the commission postponed the  four senatorial bye-elections  given the health emergency occasioned by coronavirus pandemic and the preventive measures put in place by the government.
He added that the postponement would remain until the situation normalised.

He, however, explained that the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states scheduled for September and October 2020 respectively, were not affected by the postponement.
