Even the movie’s actors don’t get it!
Melissa McCarthy recently sat down with iHeartRadio’s Johnjay and Rich who had some questions about the trailer for her Ghostbusters remake.
First of all, at the beginning of the trailer,
the words “30 years ago” are displayed, leading audiences to believe
that the new film exists in the same universe as the original 1984 film,
but apparently that’s not the case.
“It’s a reboot. I know, it’s weird that they
said the ‘30 years ago’ because in this movie, the first one didn’t
happen,” McCarthy said (via The Guardian). “It’s that great story, but told totally differently.”
As you might already know, the trailer for the
remake is the most disliked trailer in YouTube history, due in part
because many fans felt a remake was unnecessary. But the bizarre “30
years ago” lead-in certainly doesn’t help.
So, what’s the point of reminding viewers of the original movie if it’s not a part of the same storyline?
“Believe me, the question was asked. I was
like, ‘I think that’s very confusing,’ but then everyone said, ‘We don’t
care what you think,’” McCarthy explained.
